AN INDRODUCTION TO BANGLADESH

 

Bangladesh is a low-lying country with a total area of 56,977 square miles or 1,47,570 squre kilometers. It strestces  latitudinal by between 20º34′ north and longitudinally between 88º01′ and 92 º 41′ east. India terrosity mostly surrounds it except for a small strip in the southeast by Myanmar. The bay of Bengal lies on the south . Most of its area is relatively flate lying in the deltaic plain of the Ganges-Brahmutra-Meghna river system. The only sifnificant uplands are in thre northeast and southeast of the country with average elevation of 244m and 610m respectively. The country is covered with a network of rivers and canal forming a maze of interconnection channels.

 

TOPOGRAPHY

Bangladesh, with most of its parts, is at low elevations and is divided into five physical region- the ganges delta proper to the southwest, the paradelta to the northwest,the east central plains, the sylhet hills to yhe northeast, and the southeast chittagong region. Bangladesh is the largest deltaic region in the world. The ganges delta is geologically the most recent compared to the other region. Mangrove forests thrive in the active lower delta, which is flooded by fresh tidal waters. The soil base is new alluvium. The sundarbans is the largest mangrove forest in the world. The paradelta , like the delta proper is a plain, but its elevations are higher, at 100 to 300 feet (30 to 90 meters) above sea level. Its soils are varied, silt and sandy clays and old alluvium. It lies between the ganges and the (brahmaputra) jamuna rivers. The east central plains, with the meghna river almost at its centre, consists of plain and active floodplains in which the main rivers, including the brahmaputra, have altered their channels in the past. At the centre of these plain lies madhupur forests, a former sites for tiger hunting. To the northeast is the meghna depression, part of which is onl 10 feet (3 meters) above sea level; during the rainy season it turns into a huge lake, covering most of its 7,250-square kilometer (2,800- square mile) basin Bangladesh is a riverine  country and is criss-crossed by innumerable rivers, rivulets

CLIMATE

Bangladesh have a tropical monsoon climate with heavy summer rain and high summer temperature. Winters are dry and cool. South and southwest winds dominate frome mid- april to mid- October and brings enormous amounts of moisture frome the Indian ocean and the bayof Bengal; 95 percent of the total ranfall, which average about eighty inches (2,040 millimetres) occurs during that period. The temperatures range frome an average of about 68 ºF (18ºC) in January to about 86ºF(30ºC) in April.

SEASONS

Bangladesh tradition divides the year into six seasons: Grismo(summer), Barsha (rainy season), Sharat (earty atom), Hemanta (late autumn), sheet (winter), and bosonto (the spring). Foe practical purpose, however, four seasons are clearly distinguishable: summer, rainy, late autumn when harvesting takes place and winter. Ran begins to fall in April with the accompaniment of norwest or kalbaishakhi. It is then that farmers start tilling theit lands for the early crop. With the onset of monsoon in the first week of june extremely heavy downpour starts, and average temperature falls  to low 80ºF. These heavy rains prevail for about two to three months causing floods and inundation of fields and river banks

BIO-DIVERSITY

Bangladesh contains greather bio-diversity in the world than that of many countries in the world. Indeed, few countries in the world can match its rich and varied flora and fauna. Water lily is the national flower while the royal Bengal tiger is the national animale of Bangladesh, which abounds in the sundarbans, recognized as a world heritage.

 

PEOPLE

Bulding upon the firm ethnological roots and an entrepreneurial spirit and innovation skill, the people of Bangladesh are creating a special niche for themselves on the global plank. A fascinating land with a variegated history and a rich cultural tapestry, the people are endowed with a native intellect, capacity for hard work and resilience. Bangladesh are simple in nature, extremely friendly and hospitabl. With abou 140 million people, bangladesh ranks as the world,s 7th most populous country. It is also one of the most densely populated countries in the world. The staple food of the people is rice, which is generally eaten with fish curry and lentil. Most women in bangladesh a sari, and men, sarongs, locally called ‘lungi’. Bangladesh descended frome several racial and sub-racial groups cntering south asia over the past five thousand years. By and larg, they are now a single homogenous race with one common language- bangla. There are, however several small ethnic groups with their own lanuages and distinctive cultures. Birth rate in 2010 has come down to 1.32% while the percentage of literacy rate is now over 60, the highest in south asia after sri lanka. Life expectancy at birth is now over 60 year (66.8 in the year 2010)

 

LANGUAGE

Bangla, the official language, is spoken by more than 99 percent of the population but English is also generally understood particularly in urban areas. Bangla is one of the most extensively spoken languages of the world. Bengali script is derived directly frome gupta brahmi script having close affinity with Thai and Cambodian scripts. The origin of this script is generally traced to 10th century AD. Bengali is a rich language.

 

RELIGION

Islam is the predominant religion with over eighty-eight percent of the people adhering to it. Hindus comprise abou ten percent of population. The rest ase Buddhist, Christians and animists. People are generally pious and keen in observing their prespective religious rites and festivities with fervour. Bangladesh is a model of religious harmony and tolerance. Defferent religious communities and groups live in peace and minorities are well represented in all tiers of society as well as in the government machinery.

 

TIME

Standard time of Bangladesh is 6 hours ahead of GMT. Friday and Saturday are weekly government holidays while private offices and enterprises observe Friday as the weekly day-off and remain open on Saturday.

 

FINANCIAL SYSTEM AND ECONOMY

Financial system consists of one central bank (BANGLADESH BANK), 47 commercial banks (4 nationalised commercial bank or NCBs), 30 private domestic banks and 13 foreign banks, 4 state-owned specilised banks, also known as development finance institutions (DFIs), 29 non-bank financial institutions, 27 merchant bankers, 556 mony changers, the investment corporation of Bangladesh  (ICB), 2 stock exchanges ( the Dhaka stock exchange and chittagong stock exchange), 2 state-owned  and 29 private sector insurance companies, about 10 leasting companies, post office savings bank and the postal life insurance schmes. There are 145,000 co-operatives. Bangladesh samabya bank ltd is the apex institution of the co-operative sector. There are over 1,200 non-govermental and non-govermental and non-profit micro finance institutions. Till june 2000 investment, both domestic and foreign, stood at over 13,290 million us dollars and per capita income in the fiscal 2010-2011 reached $750. The government is pursuing market economyand liberalization and deregulations as well as other structural reforms are being carried out in right earnest ti integrate the countrys economy with the trend of globalization. The government has adopted liberal industrial and investment policy, which has been widely acclaimed al over the world. At this time bangladesh is fast tirning into the hub of economic activity in south asia. During the last four years a total of 95 677 large, medium and small scale industrial units were set up providing employment opportunities to a large number of people. Readymade garments sector (RMG) further burgeoned. Exclusive export processing zones in various places of the country are fast coming up and the existing ones along with port facilities have ben expanded. A pragmatic labour policy has been formulated in consultation with the representatives of workers, owners and the government, and wages have been linked up with productivity. Strict quality control has been enforced and trade has

been diversified.

List of diplomatic missions of Bangladesh

                     

This is a list of diplomatic missions of Bangladesh , excluding honorary consulates. Bangladesh maintains a 'medium' diplomatic network worldwide. Bangladesh has around 47 embassies/high commissions worldwide. In 2008, the caretaker government of Bangladesh planned to open new resident missions in Greece, Sudan , and Sierra Leone and reopen its mission in Afganistan.

However, early 2009, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh announced that they are thinking of opening few more missions in Eastern European countries like poland, and Romania, to grow the labour market. As of 30th August 2009, The Ministry of Finance of Bangladesh announced to open 7 new missions in Lebanon, Greece, Romania,Sudan, Angola ,Botswana and Mauritius.

As of December 2010, the Bangladeshi government announced that establishing embassies of Bangladesh in Afganistan,Sierra leone , and Sudan are at final stage, and in addition to that, 11 new embassies would be established in the coming years in Denmark, Mexico, Poland, Romania , Brazil,     Austria, Algeria, Portugal, Lebanon, Nigeria, and Mauritius . Also, Consulate-general offices would be soon established in Milan and Kunmin.

Sport in Bangladesh
